ALPHONSE MUCHA (1860-1939) [PORTAIT OF A LADY IN A HAT.] Pastel on paper. 1904. 45 1/2x29 inches, 115 1/2x74 cm. Condition A-: tears in image. Signed lower right. Framed. An exceptional pastel portrait of an unidentified woman, likely the wife of one of Mucha's benefactors. The aritst's son, Jiri Mucha, uses the image in his book The Master of Art Nouveau / Alphonse Mucha p. 195, plate 218, but does not identify the woman in the portrait. The pastel also appeared in a Mucha exhibition at the Grosvenor Gallery in London in 1963, where it appeared as item 103 in their catalogue.
